During the Volkswagen Golf 8 presentation workshop that we attended, the company defined us as a true ‘digital native’. And the interior is what best represents it. As standard it comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.25-inch screen infotainment system. However, optionally you can choose the Innovision Cockpit, which replaces this screen with another 10-inch with two alternative equipment systems that include extras such as on-board navigation or high-end map navigation.
The online voice control deserves special mention, which responds to natural language -or is activated by pressing the standard multifunction steering wheel- and reacts to commands such as “I’m cold” by activating the heating, or “it smells bad” by closing the air inlets to prevent odors from outside filter in, among many others.
The interior of the Golf VIII is very intuitive with automotive custom lighting, although practically all the physical buttons disappear, which have been replaced by intuitive commands or shortcut keys. It is possible, for example, to open the optional sunroof by sliding your finger across a defined touch surface on the roof and to operate the intensity of the conditioning with a sweep of your finger across the center console.
Also optional is the ‘Windshield Head-Up Display’, by the way, which projects information directly into the windshield space, as well as the high-quality 400-watt Harman Kardon sound system.
Another notable aspect is the fact that it has an OCU communication unit, which includes an eSIM card to access online services from ‘Volkswagen We’, ‘We Connect’ -prepared for unlimited use- or ‘We Connect Plus’ – free to use in Europe for a period of one to three years.
With them, and depending on the chosen equipment, you can access services such as the mobile key, online anti-theft alarm, service appointment planning, departure times in the plug-in hybrid propulsion, map updating, We Deliver with delivery services and parcel collection in the car and WLAN hotspot, among others.
Another of the services allows you to custom headlights for cars the dashboard according to your preferences and store them in the cloud, so that if there is a change of driver or car, the dynamic driving parameters, air conditioning, rear-view mirrors, ambient light, among others, will be downloaded when he returns to retrieve the vehicle.
